A DIY Guide - How to wash your vehicle like a professional

At HXDetailing, we know that not everyone uses professional car detailing services, but that doesn’t mean you can’t achieve professional results on your own! Proper car washing techniques not only make your vehicle look great but also protect its paintwork, clear coat, and overall longevity. Whether you’re a car enthusiast or just want to keep your ride looking fresh, here’s our guide to washing your car like a pro.

Firstly Gather the Right Car Washing Supplies (Should be able to find most of what you need from your local autoparts store such as Repco, Supercheap), Right tools for the Right job! Before you start, having the right tools is essential. 1. Two buckets (one for clean, soapy water and one for rinsing) 2. A grit guard to trap dirt and debris at the bottom of the bucket 3.High-quality microfiber wash mitts (use multiple to prevent cross-contamination) 4.pH-balanced car shampoo (NEVER USE dish soap, which strips wax and sealant) 5.Wheel cleaner and dedicated wheel brushes 6.Microfiber drying towels or a drying blower 7.Spray wax or ceramic sealant for extra protection and shine!

Always Start with the Wheels!! - Your car’s wheels collect the most dirt, brake dust, and road grime. If you wash them last, dirty water can splash onto your freshly cleaned paint, which just ruined your hard work. Always use a dedicated wheel cleaner and dedicated wheel brushes to clean your rims, tires, and wheel wells before moving on to the rest of the vehicle.

Use the Two-Bucket Method for a Swirl-Free Wash - The two-bucket method is a game-changer for preventing scratches and swirl marks. One bucket should hold soapy water, while the other contains clean water for rinsing your wash mitt. This prevents dirt and debris from being reintroduced to your car’s surface. After each panel dip the dirty microfiber mitt into rinsing water to release all the dirt and debris before dipping it back into the soapy water. Repeat until every panel of vehicle is finshed.

Wash from Top to Bottom, Front to Back - To avoid dragging dirt onto cleaner areas, always start at the roof and work your way down as the lower panels are closer to the road meaning they pickup more dirt when compared with the top panels. Wash in straight lines instead of circles to reduce swirl marks. Rinse your mitt frequently in the rinse bucket to keep it free from dirt buildup.

Rinse Thoroughly and Dry with a Microfiber Towel - After washing, rinsing your car thoroughly with a hose or pressure washer, making sure all soap is removed, and dry, using a high-quality microfiber drying towel or a touchless drying blower to prevent water spots and streaks.

Protect Your Paint with Wax or Ceramic Spray - For that extra shine, Apply a spray wax or ceramic sealant enhancing hydrophobic properties, and protect against dirt and contaminants, for easier maintenance.
